Questions to Ask During a Doula Interview

Expecting parents meeting with a Portland birth doula during an initial consultation.

Congratulations—you've decided to interview a birth doula!

Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, meeting with a doula is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, learn about their approach, and determine whether you're a good fit.

One of the things I tell every family is this:

You're not just hiring someone to support your birth. You're choosing someone who will walk alongside you during one of the biggest moments of your life.

The right doula should make you feel comfortable, respected, and supported from your very first conversation.

If you're just beginning your search, you may also find these blogs helpful:

1. What Training and Experience Do You Have?

Every doula's journey is different.

Ask about:

  • How long they've been practicing

  • Their training and certifications

  • How many births they've attended

  • Whether they've supported births similar to yours

  • Continuing education they complete

Experience doesn't automatically make one doula "better" than another, but understanding their background can help you decide whether they're the right fit for your family.

2. What Does Your Birth Support Include?

Every doula structures their services differently.

Ask questions like:

  • How many prenatal visits are included?

  • When do you go on call?

  • When do you come to my home or the hospital?

  • How long do you stay after birth?

  • Is postpartum follow-up included?

  • How do you communicate during pregnancy?

It's helpful to understand exactly what support you'll receive before making your decision.

3. What's Your Philosophy About Birth?

Every doula brings their own personality and approach to birth support.

Ask questions like:

  • How do you support different birth preferences?

  • Have you attended inductions?

  • Do you support epidurals?

  • Have you supported planned cesareans or VBACs?

  • How do you help partners feel involved?

A good doula supports your birth goals—not their own.

4. What Happens If You're Unavailable?

Birth is unpredictable.

Ask whether your doula has a trusted backup in case of illness or emergency.

It's reassuring to know you'll still receive quality care if unexpected circumstances arise.

5. How Do You Support My Partner?

One of the biggest misconceptions about hiring a doula is that partners become less involved.

In reality, it's often the opposite.

Ask your doula:

  • How do you involve partners?

  • Will you teach comfort techniques?

  • How do you help partners feel confident?

  • How do you work as a team?

At Birthing Days, I see my role as supporting both the birthing person and their partner. My goal is never to replace your partner—it's to help them feel prepared, included, and confident throughout labor.

6. How Will We Communicate Before Birth?

Pregnancy comes with lots of questions.

Ask:

  • Can I text or email between appointments?

  • What happens if I have concerns before labor?

  • How quickly do you typically respond?

One of the biggest benefits of hiring a doula is knowing you have someone to turn to throughout your pregnancy—not just on the day your baby is born.

7. Do I Feel Comfortable With You?

This may be the most important question of all.

Your doula will be present during one of the most personal experiences of your life.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel heard?

  • Do I feel respected?

  • Can I be myself?

  • Do I trust this person?

Sometimes your instincts tell you everything you need to know.

Don't Be Afraid to Interview More Than One Doula

Meeting with several doulas is completely normal.

Every doula has a different personality, communication style, and approach to supporting families.

The goal isn't simply to find an experienced doula.

It's to find your doula.

Someone who helps you feel calm, informed, and supported from the moment you meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many doulas should I interview?

Many families interview two or three before making a decision. Taking the time to compare personalities, experience, and communication styles can help you feel confident in your choice.

Is it okay if I don't know what questions to ask?

Absolutely! A good doula will guide the conversation and encourage you to ask anything that's on your mind. There are no "silly" questions when it comes to preparing for your birth.

When should I schedule doula interviews?

Most families begin interviewing doulas during the second trimester. You can learn more in my blog When Should You Hire a Doula?.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a doula is about more than comparing services or experience.

It's about finding someone you genuinely connect with—someone who listens, respects your choices, and helps you feel confident as you prepare to welcome your baby.
